Prevention of Opioid Addiction

Opioid addiction is classified as a Substance Use Disorder (SUD), complex and chronic health condition with physical, social, psychological consequences. While there no cure for it, we present novel approach towards preventing hallmark feature of addiction-- the opiate withdrawal syndrome. Opioids exert numerous effects, acutely chronically, on nervous system physical dependence, tolerance, being most adverse features. The degree opioid dependence can be quantified by frequency and/or intensity behavioral expression seen after abrupt termination consumption or treatment an antagonist such naloxone. Although Central Nervous System (CNS) primary area impact, involvement immune in modifying CNS phenomena was suggested nearly two centuries ago proved several groups within last few decades. Through series studies immunomodulators alpha interferon, cyclosporine A, cortisol, preclinical experiments show that administration these agents prior to morphine exposure prevents addiction. This review provides updates current developments management epidemic overview preventative immunomodulation repetitive means addressing one underlying symptomatology driving epidemic.
